Brennan, Steil & Basting, S.C. History
The history of the firm began in 1878 when Thomas S. Nolan began practicing law in the Jackman & Smith building, now known as the One East Milwaukee Street building in Janesville, Wisconsin.
Thomas S. Nolan was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, on October 11, 1856. His law studies were conducted from 1878-79 at the firm of Eldredge & Fethers, under the direction of Barnabas Ballou Eldredge. Mr. Nolan was a highly respected attorney. In 1900, William Daugherty joined the practice. The two continued to practice law in Rock County with Paul N. Grubb joining in 1921 and Stanley M. Ryan in 1922.
By the mid-1950's the late Glen R. Campbell's leadership provided the catalyst for the firm to grow to new prominence as a business practice and trial firm.
Our firm has a proud tradition of professional and community leadership. All of our employees are encouraged to be active in the community, to perform pro bono legal services to those in need and to fulfill their obligation to their profession. Appointments from the Governor of Wisconsin have allowed several of our attorneys to serve the people of Wisconsin by participation as the first Chair of the Wisconsin Lottery Board, as Chair of the Governor's Advisory Council on Judicial Selection, as Special Counsel to the State of Wisconsin Ethics Board, as Special Prosecutor in the state lobby law investigations, and with an appointment to the Wisconsin Public Defender Board overseeing the affairs of the Wisconsin Public Defender System. Our attorneys and support staff are active members of their communities by raising their families, being involved in school and church activities, and serving on civic committees. This exemplifies the commitment of Brennan, Steil & Basting, S.C. to provide quality service to its clients by attorneys who have a dedication to their profession and to their community.
Today, our firm continues to honor its founder's high ideals and dedication to the private practice of law.
