George K. Steil, Sr.
A senior shareholder in Brennan, Steil Basting, S.C., George K. Steil, Sr., concentrates his practice in estate planning, probate, business law, and governmental relations. His illustrious career has seen him as a member of many statewide associations and committees. In 1974 he was named a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, which is an international organization dedicated to modernizing and improving probate procedures. Mr. Steil was elected president of the State Bar of Wisconsin in 1976. He was appointed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court and subsequently became the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin Board of Attorneys Professional Responsibility, which administered the lawyer disciplinary system within the state.
Mr. Steil has been a lecturer in law at the University of Wisconsin Law School from which he received his Law Degree. He has also taught probate law in the Wisconsin General Practice Course. In 1991, he received the Distinguished Service Award of the University of Wisconsin Law School, which is the highest award given by the School to an alumnus or faculty member.
Honored by the Wisconsin Bar Foundation for his outstanding public service as a citizen, an attorney, and as a humanitarian, Mr. Steil was the 9th recipient of the Charles L. Goldberg Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Steil has also been appointed by former Governor Thompson as first Chairman of the Wisconsin Lottery Board; as Chairman of the Governor's Advisory Council on Judicial Selection, which recommends applicants for judicial positions; and in 1990 as a member of the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin. He served as President of the Board of Regents from 1992 - 1994.
Mr. Steil served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank One, Janesville, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Bank One Wisconsin Trust Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He currently serves as a Director of Acuity Insurance Company of Sheboygan and as Chairman of Acuity Bank of Tomah, WI. He previously served as Chairman of the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics Authority. In 1993, he was named to the Best Lawyers in America in both corporate and probate areas.
